The River Norm is the recording and songwriting project of Canadian musician and composer Norm Zabala, based in Victoria, British Columbia.

Originally from the Philippines and raised in Montreal, Norm began as a self-taught musician before studying music at the McGill Conservatory of Music and Concordia University.

Over the course of his professional career, Norm has worked as a performer, composer, musical director, and recording musician. A significant chapter of his career was working with Canadian recording artist Florence K, serving as her musical director, songwriting partner, and touring musician.

Alongside performing and recording, Norm has spent much of his career as a music educator. His approach combines practical musicianship with creativity, theory, ear training, and a focus on each student’s individual goals.

Today, Norm is the founder and owner of The River Norm Music School in Victoria, offering private instruction in guitar, piano, voice, ukulele, bass, songwriting, music theory, and ear training.

As The River Norm, he continues to write, record, and release original music. His current work is rooted in acoustic-driven songwriting, storytelling, and intimate performances.
